Bringing On The Heartache....

Happy Monday, readers! I hope every one is well rested, ready to begin their week and had a very happy holiday! I know I did.

Today's post is going to be about books that tug at the heartstrings.

Personally, I love so many different kinds of books. It doesn't matter if they are memoirs, or science fiction. I'll read anything.

EXCEPT.....

Now I know most of you love a good tearjerker, who doesnt, right? But there are some books where I know I can't read them before I've even bought them. The heartwrenching ones. The books that will make me depressed for at least a day after reading them.

I read the synopsis for a novel the other day and just after reading the synopsis, I said NO I will not read this. I couldn't even get through the synopsis without tearing up.

I think it's different when you read a novel where you know the situation is fictional. And if at the end something good happens. But nonetheless, I cannot read novels that are severely depressing..

What are your thoughts? Opinions?

    Well, when I pick up a tear-jerker, I know I can't really handle it, but I also can't resist not buying it because I want to know what happens. I usually end up buying the book and then feeling sad for a few days! I did that with "Saving Levi".

    I'm like you. I just can't do it. I don't want to be depressed by books. Books are supposed to entertain. Some sadness is fine, but there needs to be a happy ending at least. Otherwise, no thank you. It's just not for me.

    I'm with you and Kelly I just can't do it. I don't mind the occasional tear-jerker moments in a piece BUT I cannot read an entire book that is quite so depressing. I come away feeling it all day. I just can't. Love me some happy endings. I'm a firm believer they are possible in real life!

    Like Living Dead Girl? It wasn't a tear jerker, but talk about depressing. So sad! Like the rest of you, I like at least a marginally happy ending.

    Interesting question. For me, it would depend on what type of "depressing" subject it was, and how much I loved the writers' prose and ability to inform me in a way that is larger than the bummer subject itself. For instance, 1984 is very harsh, but there are so many amazing ideas to chew on, that you don't even care!

    I think a tearjerker isn't so bad - but when a book is just brain-numbingly depressing with no end in sight, I don't even want to cry. I just kind of shut down intellectually, like, "Enough is enough already."

    I'm that way with movies. If it looks too depressing, I won't even attempt it. I don't seek out depressing books, but, if they're good, I'll read them. In private. Where no one can see me cry.

    I don't like *depressing* depressing...but if I'm that moved by the back cover, then I'll HAVE to get the book--I know what I'm in for, but I can't resist something so MOVING. I'll only be disappointed if it turns out to be blah instead.
