The insane ramblings of Lauren Hammond, a YA book author and literary agent.
What Kind Of Music Inspires You?
Secondly, I hear a lot of writers talk about what kind of music inspires them. Others say they don't like to listen to music at all.
I have to admit I'm guilty of the first. It's not very often that I write without music. The type, well, that depends on what kind of scene I'm writing. I'm a big fan of classical music. Moonlight Sonata by: Beethoven has to be my favorite by far.
I find that the haunting melody puts me in a creative zen zone. And honestly, I feel like that's when I write the best. When I'm completely relaxed and Beethoven is blasting from itunes.
I've compiled a list of my favortie tunes to listen to while I'm writing.
1. Moonlight Sonata~ Beethoven
2. Fur Elise ~ Beethoven
3. Canon in D ~ Pachabel
4. Ohh La La~ Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
5. My Heart~ Paramore
6. Grenade ~ Bruno Mars
7. E.T ~ Katy Perry
8. Free Bird ~ Lynard Skynard
9. Me & Bobby McGee ~ Janis Joplin
10. Young Lust ~ Pink Floyd
What are some of your favorites?
Cheers!

that's quite an ecletic mix you have going! I pretty much HAVE to be listening to music when I write -- plus I keep music on all day while I work. Silence is deafening for me.
I generally listen to folk/pop kind of music, but particularly love anything by Joshua Radin!

I can't listen to any music when I write. But, like Kelly, I often listen to it beforehand, or when I'm thinking up the plot. For my current WIP, it's rock, pretty dark stuff. Um, Crazytown, The Animals It's my Life, or Velvet Revolver. Yeah, it's an out-there kind of story.

I actually listen to nature sounds. I picked up a set of cds probably fifteen years ago or so, and I copied them to my computer. So now I plug in my headphones and listen to rain, ocean waves, rivers, and tropical rainforest sounds. There's a little background music at times, too, as well as windchimes, so I find it perfect for working. :)
But, really, I can listen to any music as long as there are no words. Or, if there are words, it has to be in a language I don't understand. Otherwise I'll fixate on the words in the music instead of the words in front of me. :)
Check out this awesome project!

I like to listen to music before I write. It gets me in a creative mood. The kind of music varies depending on what I'm listening. When the actual writing time comes, I like it quiet. The only thing I want to hear are my characters.
Great interview on LM's site!
